Scenes involving the dark lord Sauron's domain of Mordor is represented in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy by the rocky plateau of Tongariro National Park. Though the famous volcano Ruapehu is not to be seen, out of respect for the wishes of the native Maori people to whom it is a sacred place, one of the other two volcanoes on the plateau now stands in for Mount Doom. Otherwordly formations, sulphuric pools and hot springs add to the strangeness of the region. With the help of a little special- effects magic, Tongariro became Mordor. Edoras is the capital of Rohan, kingdom of the Earth of Middle. The city of Edoras was built on a hill in a valley of the White Mountains by Rohan's second King. It was here that Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, and Gandalf meet with King Théoden. In Peter Jackson's film version, a fully realized set for Edoras was built on Mount Sunday in the upper reaches of the Rangitata Valley, near Erewhon. Edoras in the movie: Edoras in real:
